My family needs your help.
This is my brother, Sky. This photo was taken in 2012 when he was serving his third tour of duty, working for the Marine Special Operations Command in Afghanistan where he trained local police and worked to drive out Taliban violence from the communities he served in.
On August 10th, 2012, my brother was betrayed and killed by an Afghan National policeman in a late night attack on the base in which they both lived. Two other Marines died in the attack, and a fourth was wounded.
As my family has grieved the loss of Sky over the past year, we've been incredibly fortunate to have the support of generous groups like the MARSOC Foundation. They invited and helped us travel to several Marine events and memorials, allowing us to connect to the soldiers who served alongside my brother. Last October, with just a few week’s notice, they invited my mom and I to join The FreeWheel Foundation on The Ride for Semper Fi on a 430 mile bike ride from Phoenix to San Diego.
During the four day ride, my mom and I had the privilege of getting to know the people of The Ride for Semper Fi. Collectively, they have raised over $1.4 million for injured Marines and the families of Marines killed in action. They provide injured soldiers with rehabilitation equipment that they otherwise couldn’t afford. They send the children of Marines killed in action to Knights of Heroes summer camps. They relocate the families of injured Marines so that they can be closer to rehabilitation centers. And they donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to other organizations that support fallen Marines and their families, such as the MARSOC Foundation. They’re some of the hardest working and most generous people I know.
This year, my family wants to give back to the incredible groups that have helped us so much and join them for the 2013 Ride for Semper Fi — all 430 miles of it. Before we can do that, however, we need to raise our goal of $10,000 for The FreeWheel Foundation.
Here's where my family needs your help:
Help us raise our goal of $10,000 by visiting the link below and donating whatever you can in memory of Sky. It doesn't matter how much you give — even $10 can make a difference to the injured Marines and their families who need your support — support that the government that sent them to war wont give them.
Your donation will go to The FreeWheel Foundation who will then distribute it directly to the groups that support injured Marines and their families. You can read more about them further below.
Thank you. It means a lot to me and my family, but it means even more to the soldiers who have sacrificed so much.
The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund provides immediate financial support for injured and critically ill members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. Services include specialized & adaptive equipment, adaptive housing and transportation, education and career assistance, therapeutic arts and sports rehabilitation.
Knights of Heroes empowers children who have lost a parent during military service by providing positive adult mentorship, character development, and lasting friendships forged during an annual wilderness adventure camp.
The MARSOC Foundation provides support to active duty and medically retired MARSOC personnel and their families, as well as to the families of Marines who have lost their lives in service to our nation.
The Foundation handles needs unmet by the government with an emphasis on building personal and family resilience and supporting the full reintegration of MARSOC Marines and Sailors following wounds, injuries and extended deployments.
